SIP or lumpsum: which suits you?

A simple way to think about it, with an example.

"Should I invest every month or all at once?" This is one of the most common questions we hear. There is no single right answer, but there is a simple way to think about it.

SIP: when your money comes in every month

A Systematic Investment Plan puts a fixed amount into a mutual fund scheme every month, by auto-debit. It suits salaried people and anyone who saves a part of their income regularly.

  • Builds a habit: the money is invested before it is spent.
  • Spreads your buying: you buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they are high, so you do not have to guess the right day.
  • Flexible: you can start small, increase it every year (step-up), pause or stop it.

Lumpsum: when you already have the money

A bonus, the sale of property, a maturity amount or savings lying in the bank — this money is already with you. Investing it at once means all of it is invested from day one. The risk is that if the market falls soon after, the whole amount feels the fall.

A middle path is an STP (Systematic Transfer Plan): park the amount in a lower-risk fund and move a fixed part into an equity fund every month.

A simple way to decide

  • Money comes every month → SIP.
  • Money is already with you, and the goal is far away → lumpsum or STP, depending on how comfortable you are with ups and downs.
  • Money will be needed within a year or two → equity funds are usually not suitable for it at all.

Whatever you choose, staying invested for the full time you planned usually matters more than the way you started.

Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; read all scheme related documents carefully. Past performance may or may not be sustained in future and is not a guarantee of future returns.
