INSURANCE

Understand your cover before the day you need it.

Health, life and term, accident, motor and business insurance — what each one does, what it does not, and how claims work. Explained simply, with a team you can call.

Types of insurance, in simple words

Health insurance

Pays hospital bills for you, your family or your parents.

  • Individual and family floater plans
  • Senior citizen plans
  • Top-up and super top-up
  • Critical illness cover

Good to know: Check the room-rent limit, co-payment, waiting periods and sub-limits — these decide how much of a bill is actually paid.

Life and term insurance

Protects your family's income if you are not there.

  • Pure term cover (no maturity amount, lowest premium)
  • Life insurance plans with savings
  • Child and retirement plans
  • Riders: accident, critical illness, premium waiver

Good to know: Term cover is usually sized to 10–15 times yearly income plus loans. Try the term cover calculator for your own numbers.

Personal accident

Money if an accident causes death, disability or loss of income.

  • Accidental death and permanent disability
  • Temporary disability / weekly income benefit
  • Usually a low premium for a high cover

Good to know: Health insurance pays the hospital; accident cover pays you. Many families need both.

Motor and general

Your vehicle, home, shop and travel.

  • Car, two-wheeler and commercial vehicle
  • Home and shop insurance
  • Travel insurance

Good to know: Third-party motor insurance is compulsory by law. Own-damage cover protects your own vehicle.

SME and group

For business owners and their employees.

  • Group health and group accident
  • Workmen's compensation
  • Fire, stock and shop policies

Good to know: Group cover through an employer usually ends when the job ends — a personal policy stays with you.

Why claims get rejected — and how to avoid it

Most problems start on the proposal form, long before the claim.

Declare everything

Illnesses, medicines, past surgeries, smoking and alcohol habits. A missing or wrong answer can cancel a claim years later.

Read the limits

Room rent, co-payment, disease-wise sub-limits and waiting periods decide how much of a bill is paid.

Never miss a renewal

A lapsed health policy can mean losing the waiting periods you have already served.

Keep your nominee updated

A correct nominee and contact details make life and accident claims faster for your family.

How a claim works

The insurer decides and settles the claim as per policy terms. Our team helps you with the process.

1

Inform early

Tell the insurer (and us, on 097253 53500) before a planned admission, or as soon as possible in an emergency.

2

Cashless or reimbursement

At a network hospital, ask for cashless. Otherwise pay, keep every bill and claim later.

3

Documents

Claim form, ID, policy copy, discharge summary, bills, reports and prescriptions — complete and legible.

4

Follow up

Reply quickly to any query from the insurer until the claim is settled.

Common questions

How much health cover does my family need?

It depends on your city, family size and ages. Our health cover calculator gives a simple guide. Medical costs rise every year, so review your cover every few years.

I already have cover from my employer. Do I need my own?

Employer cover usually ends when you leave the job, and it may not be enough for the whole family. A personal policy keeps your cover and waiting-period benefits with you.

What if I have an existing illness?

Always declare it. Many plans cover pre-existing diseases after a waiting period. Not declaring a health condition is one of the most common reasons claims get rejected.

Can I move (port) my health policy to another insurer?

Yes. Health policies can be ported at renewal, and waiting periods already served are carried over as per IRDAI rules. Apply before the renewal date.

What is the free-look period?

After you receive a new policy, you get a free-look period (usually 30 days for most policies) to read it and return it if it does not suit you, as per the policy terms.

Where do I complain if an insurer does not resolve my issue?

First write to the insurer's grievance cell. If it is not resolved, you can approach IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal or the Insurance Ombudsman.
